Born in a small town in the woods,
where fox and hare said good night.
I didn't catch the first blow in sports,
spent a childhood of faint and fright.

At a time when beating was education.
At a time only a few were bothered by it.
At a time accidents were the accusation.
This time, without bruises, you didn't fit.

Educated by a generation of rubble,
the kids of the German economic miracle.
Alcohol & cigarettes made more trouble.
They put children in clothes of debacle.

As a boy with no prefs but a hard hand,
excluded from poverty on the social edge,
through ambition, pride and tough stand,
fought through to education and a hatch.

At a time youth threatened by cold war.
At the time an iron curtain made excited.
At a time Chernobyl was getting nuclear.
This time when Germany went reunited.

They placed a uniform in my hands
and sent me to a foreign country,
stuck me alone with NVA veterans,
as a Wessi under Ossis got right funny.

Though being alone struck me farer,
luckly, i had my experience firsthand.
Learned, life can be much harder,
only rich people get richer in this land.

Now I've long been a dad here myself.
At a time with new threats for democracy.
Peace is truly a fragile state for ourselves.
Fascist forces are dividing Germany.

I got my children on the right track.
They know where what is in history,
They learned to appreciate their luck,
continuing their lives here resiliently.
